Heavens to Etsy
I’ve mentioned in several of my blog entries that the process of building a business can be a lonely one. And while that may be true, I’m also increasingly aware that you’re never going through the motions entirely alone. Sometimes, if you can just manage to look up from your own narrow dirt path, you realize that there’s literally hundreds of people off in the distance attempting the very same climb. For whatever reason, this fleeting sense of camaraderie can provide a little dose of encouragement to keep trekking.
Well, for me, this much needed jolt came in the form of Etsy. For those of you that don’t know, Etsy is basically like Ebay, but for kick-ass craftspeople, and it is sooo much more fun to browse. At this point, I can easily lose 2-3 hours a day just poking around the different shops and discovering all kinds of magical creations. It has completely renewed my faith in people and their ability to be original.
A girl can grow skeptical if she relies solely on magazines and television shows to keep one finger on the pulse. Well, I’m happy to say that it’s time to shake the cobwebs off of that imagination of yours and take an inspirational detour. In just the past month, I’ve happened upon handmade creations that bring back childhood memories, quirky humor shared between friends, odd pop culture references, and genuinely some of the coolest things ever made with ten fingers.
So, to express my gratitude for this wealth of inspiration, I have opened the virtual doors to my own Etsy shop, where I will sell my Talk Shirty to Me collection, along with one-of-a-kind, hand-stitched tees, screenprinted totes, and stuff for baby. And, best of all, I’ll be adding a new section to the blog, entitled Heavens to Etsy, where I’ll highlight some of my favorite weekly finds. Below are two of the gems uncovered this past month. Just click on the picture to visit the corresponding Etsy shop.
Perhaps my favorite store at the moment, The Mincing Mockingbird features original artwork with what may well be the best titles ever. The name of this particular print is Listen, If We Could Be Serious For A Moment, I Think I Have Been Shot. Each bird has a distinct personality, which is strangely captured spot on by the lengthy titles. I’d strongly encourage anyone with an hour to spare to peruse the full collection of prints, magnets and notecards.
Another of my favorite shops, Bittersweeets, also infuses crafty items with personality, but with these creations, you have to step carefully. At first glance, you might think you’re looking at cute little brooches and magnets in the shape of your favorite treats, but lean in a bit closer. These cookies and cupcakes are angry. The title of this particular brooch is Shock and Disbelief Angry Cookie with a Bite Out of Him. Apparently, his trip to the library was interrupted by a selfish diner with a sweet tooth.
Made in Vancouver, BC, these little unique pieces are super affordable and just cute as can be–even though they may be giving you the evil eye.
