Your Shell is Showing.
“Just take this pen and write me.” -Diane Court, Say Anything
For a 32 year old, I’d say I’m pretty hip to technology. Give me a stylesheet, I can decode it. Insert some html on a webpage? I’m your girl. Process graphics, create vectors? Yeah, I’m pickin’ up what you’re puttin’ down. That said, I have an increasingly overwhelming sense that I can’t keep up. I have refused to join twitter, or engage in any manner of tweeting. Until two weeks ago, that is. And I’m starting to suspect it’s the last straw.
A tortoise by nature, I have crammed my hard, round shell into a ridiculous bunny suit. Joining Myspace, then Facebook, getting Skype, tending to photo albums on Flickr and Picasa, 4 different e-mail accounts, 4 online shops, a blog, succumbing to the Twitter tidal wave, and so on, and so on. I am drowning in status updates, text messages, links that continuously drag me here, there and everywhere. Well, my shell is busting through the seams, and I’m afraid safety pins aren’t gonna do the trick this time.
I hate to be one of those curmudgeons that reminisces about old times, but lordy, lordy, do I miss the days when a status update took the form of a phone call or a letter. Don’t get me wrong, it can be great to receive up-to-the-minute information, reconnect with familiar faces from the past, and be able to access files and accounts from just about anywhere. Unfortunately though, this fast-paced, instant gratification has not only forced me into a lame, fluffy disguise, I’ve also developed a pesky addiction to the near constant flow of information. Status updates are the new crack. And this bunny needs an intervention.
So, in an effort to reclaim my shell and relaxed pace, I’m choosing to escape it all this week. No tweets. No updates. None of it. And to help get me in the mood, I chose to feature some Etsy items that help turn my memory back to simpler times. And hey, if you want to get in touch, pick up a pen and write me.

Blackbird,
I feel the same way from time to time. While it’s gratifying, for some, to have an instant messenger or a twitter feed blurt out up to the moment non-sense it also makes a statement about our culture. The days of waiting for a post card are few and far between now. The anticipation of a friend or loved one writing from a far away place is long gone.
Please don’t misunderstand this response as someone who shuns technology. Comically…I have fallen prey to having a blog myself. It is more of a feeling that technology is impersonal at times. A person’s inflection and tone are drowned out. For instance the curves of a person’s handwriting, telling a story of their very personality, are blotted out into block text.
Some of these technological nuances can even take a person away from the natural beauty of the landscapes that surround them. In turn numbing a person to the little things. Ask a person when the last time they have watched the sun rise or set? Most haven’t. Some may have never.
Stepping out of my box for a moment and having given this some thought. Hopefully this isn’t weird to ask but from one complete stranger to another:
Which would you have preferred? A letter or a post card?
