Teen Spirit
Grunge Gloves in Curry by While They Play.
My boyfriend and I joined Netflix this summer, and after checking out a handful of new releases, we quickly spiraled into a silly obsession with 90s television shows. Last time I checked, we had churned through the first 5 seasons of Beverly Hills 90210, and I recently felt compelled to rent the first (and only) season of My So-called Life. Within a week, I devoured all 15 or so episodes. I had such affection forĀ the show when it originally aired and thought it would stir up some of my own teen angst-filled memories.
It has been 19 years since I started high school. Holy moly. That’s frightening to think about. Well, and to my chagrin, in watching My So-called Life this time around, I actually related much more to the experiences and emotions of the parents. Ugh, what the hell? Not really sure at what point that change occurred, but it frightens me to no end.
Meanwhile, Angela Chase, the protagonist, came off as whiny and annoying. Jordan Catalano, her love interest, was more self-consumed douchebag than dreamy heartthrob, and most of the teen-centered plot lines were overflowing with contrived, cheesy dialogue. But all that aside, those very same plot lines successfully brought with them the flood of nostalgia I was aching for. After all, at 14 years old, I was whiny, annoying, overly dramatic, and yes, a little bit cheesy. And while I’m being honest, the vast majority of boys I stayed up dreaming about were most likely douchebags, too.
